WELCOME TO THE UNITARIAN TORCH WEB SITE

Hello, my name is Dr. Robert Kokenyesi; as the creator of this site I want to welcome you to this place of learning about Transylvanian Unitarian religion.

The site has three main purposes:

  1. 1. Raise awareness and appreciation in the English-speaking unitarian community, in the Hungarian and Transylvanian diaspora about the hitherto hidden treasures of refined thoughts and ideas expressed by Transylvanian Unitarian ministers.  This purpose is achieved by presenting on Unitarian Torch translated Hungarian language sermons preached in Transylvanian Unitarian churches.
  2. 2. Raise awareness and appreciation in the English-speaking unitarian community about the opportunity for spiritual growth represented by Transylvanian Unitarian sermons and Transylvanian children’s literature. This purpose is achieved by presenting on Unitarian Torch entire US unitarian orders of services, and translated folk tales and children’s literature from Transylvania.
  3. 3. Raise awareness and appreciation about the uniqueness of the Transylvanian Unitarian Church by providing information about the organization, holidays, historic stories, and other hard-to-come-by aspects of the Hungarian Unitarian Church. This purpose is achieved by a collection of information snipets on Unitarian Torch.

Why call this site Unitarian Torch?  I’ll paraphrase a quote sometime attributed to Benjamin Franklin, sometime to Gustav Mahler: “Keeping tradition is about passing down the flame, and not about worshiping the ashes.”  In 1868 Kriza János, the then Bishop of the Transylvanian Unitarian Church, wrote “The souls of our joyful people set ablaze as we walk through the memories” of the past hundreds of years of unitarian history.

My intent is to bring the bright flame of Unitarian Torch to illuminate the treasure of Transylvanian Unitarian ideals that accumulated, but stayed hidden from English speakers, for over 450 years.  My hope is that the Unitarian Torch will kindle the flame of excitement and dedication in the souls of new generations of people.
